Methodology
Exceptional performance, relative to your peers.
URR combines age- and gender-adjusted erg performance (60%) with verified on-water racing performance (40%). Everyone uses the same centrally versioned rules. During the Shawnigan pilot, the leaderboard directory and positions are restricted to approved members of your own club.
Erg performance
We use the latest eligible verified 2,000 m RowErg result from the previous six calendar months and your age on the test date. The percentile counts slower reference performances and half of tied performances. Scores stay unavailable without suitable verified reference distributions. Voluntary online rankings alone are not treated as representative of all rowers.
Version 1.0 requires at least 30 reference performances per exact age and benchmark gender. This is a conservative minimum sample-size guard, not proof that a dataset is representative. An administrator must document the source, population, verification and suitability before importing a versioned dataset.
Published percentile tables · estimated benchmarks
Approved Concept2 tables provide four published cutoffs: 90th, 75th, 50th and 25th percentiles. Between adjacent cutoffs, we interpolate linearly: P1 + (T − T1) × (P2 − P1) / (T2 − T1). Times must increase as percentiles decrease. This estimates a position within the documented source cohort, not an exact official Concept2 percentile or a representative worldwide rank.
We match verified gender and age at the test date to the source’s actual age range. All-age tables never serve as age-specific references. Missing compatible tables produce “Benchmark unavailable.” Faster than the 90th cutoff means “Above 90th percentile.” Slower than the 25th means “Below 25th percentile.” These ranges have no invented numerical erg score or overall rating.
Numeric estimates use the same 60/40 URR formula and unchanged on-water calculation, but remain provisional in a separate pilot view. Full-distribution benchmarks always take priority and are required for official eligibility. Published tables require source, filter, cohort and data-use review before activation; fictional development samples are blocked in production. Interpolation method: PUBLISHED-PERCENTILES-1.0.
Racing evidence
Official finishes from the previous 12 calendar months are weighted by boat class, controlled competition level and field size. These weights change the influence of a result; winning a single does not automatically add bonus points.
Five prior-weighted races at 50% provide a neutral starting point. With no eligible races the internal baseline is 50; the interface shows “No verified races yet” rather than an earned score, with no official ranking. Missing results are never losses.
Official eligibility
An active athlete needs a current verified 2K, verified age/gender identity and suitable benchmarks, plus five verified eligible races at two separate regattas. Otherwise the athlete is provisional or unranked, with an explanation on their profile.
Fair and consistent treatment
Dead heats use the average of occupied ranks: two crews tied for first receive rank 1.5. A shared first place counts as a shared win in descriptive statistics, with fractional placement used in scoring. Each classification at each regatta counts once, so heats and finals are not separate victories. Fewer than two eligible boats, mixed boat-class races, incomplete crews, disqualifications, withdrawals, DNS and DNF do not contribute. Coxswains receive no rowing placement points.
Coaches submit and verify official evidence within their club. Athletes cannot approve their own records; a coach who participated in a crew cannot verify that crew. Regatta competition levels, field sizes and classifications are registered centrally, not selected by athletes.
Advanced calculation rules
Erg Score = 100 × (slower references + 0.5 × tied references) / reference count.
Placement = (eligible boats − fractional finishing rank) / (eligible boats − 1).
Field weight = min(1, (eligible boats − 1) / 3). Effective weight = boat weight × competition weight × field weight.
On-Water Score = 100 × (2.5 + sum of weight × placement) / (5 + sum of weights).
URR = 0.60 × Erg Score + 0.40 × On-Water Score.
Boat weights: 1x 1.20; 2x and 2- 1.15; 4x, 4- and 4+ 1.05; 8+ 1.00. Competition weights: local 0.80; regional 1.00; provincial/state 1.10; national 1.20; international 1.25.
Calculations retain full precision. Displayed ratings use one decimal place. Exactly equal underlying official ratings share a competition rank (1, 1, 3). Filters preserve scores and universal ranks.
Transparent and versioned
Each historical calculation preserves its inputs, benchmark version and algorithm configuration. New verified evidence and expired windows update ratings on the next read; a trusted daily refresh command can update all records without visiting profiles. Official timing and margins are stored for future versions but do not affect URR 1.0.
URR supports performance analysis. It does not replace coaching judgment, technique assessment or crew-selection decisions.
